The 4 General Sources of Financial Aid

1. Federal Aid

Type: Pell Grant, Work-Study Job, Subsidized/Unsubsidized Stafford & Direct Loan, Perkins Loan, Parent PLUS loan.

Apply:
Use 2006-2007 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ . FAFSA is usually available at schools by December 1st. The filing period begins January 1, 2003. The student should keep a copy and mail the original FAFSA form with signatures in the envelope provided, OR file online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

2. State Aid:
“The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency.

Apply:
Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year.”

It is recommended that you visit the sites for both your state of residence and for the state of the colleges to which you are applying. You can do so at http://www.finaid.org/otheraid/state.phtml

3. Institutional Aid:
Type: Grant/Scholarship from the college/university itself.

Apply:
Students should inquire of the financial aid office at each college they are interested in and ask if the school has any applications for other scholarships or grants that are awarded by the school itself. In addition, many private colleges require students to fill out another independent financial aid form called “Profile” http://profileonline.collegeboard.com . The college will inform the student if the Profile form is required, and usually the student must pay a fee to file the “Profile” form.

4. Outside Aid

Scholarship, Grant and Loan.

Apply:
Eligible students should apply to groups like The Armenian Scholarship Foundation for scholarships, grants or loans. A list of helpful web site links can be found on our website under “Financial aid Links”.
